Moore Haven Elementary just finished a school wide project called “10 Days of THANKSgiving” to honor our military personnel who are serving overseas. Each day the students brought in items from a list such as snack foods, toiletry items, magazines, reading materials, puzzles, cards, games, toys, etc. The tremendous response resulted in sixty boxes being shipped out before Thanksgiving to twenty different deployed individuals who are going to be away from home during the Christmas holidays. A majority of the packages went to the USS Mustin, as recommended by Chief Travis Dionne, alumni of Moore Haven Elementary (and high school). Chief Dionne mentioned that a lot of the junior sailors are away from home for the first time and receiving a care package would mean so much to them.
Our students turned it into a competition between classes. There was a tie for first place with Mrs. Stefanie Garrett’s first grade and Ms. Kortni Harris’s Kindergarten students. Second place went to Mr. Anthony Narehood’s third grade homeroom. These three classes won a donut party for their hard work. All of the classes did a great job participating and over 1400 items came in to be shipped out. A special thank you goes out to volunteer Crystal Hendry for collecting the items from the classes each day, packing the boxes, and helping address the boxes for shipping. MHES also wants to thank HE Hill Foundation of Belle Glade for sponsoring the shipping.
As we look ahead to Christmas, the students will now be gathering items for the “12 Days of Giving” by donating items for the nursing homes, a Veteran’s assisted living home, and some food for local families.
Some of the boxes were enjoyed by Alumni Tracy Aldrich and his fellow troops!!!!
